Cittaslow promotes the use of technology aimed at improving environmental quality of and the municipal network itself, while simultaneously safeguarding the manufacture of pure and honest food produce which contribute to the region’s character. Furthermore, Cittaslow is an advocate of direct dialogue between local producers and consumers.
By adopting umbrella ideas with regard to environmental conservation, the promotion of sustainable development and improving the quality of life, Cittaslows stimulate food production using natural and environmentally-friendly methods. One of the methods promoted to achieve this is the so-called ‘Slow Food Presidia’.
The term ‘Cittaslow’ has developed into a mark of quality for smaller municipalities. Only those with less than 50,000 residents can apply. Cittaslows are not capital cities or seats of regional governments, but rather strong communities which have made the conscious decision to enhance the quality of life for their residents, and have laid down policies to enforce this.
