Cittaslow’s origins

Cittaslow’s origins lie in Orvieto, Italy. The organisation was set up in 1999 by the Mayors of Orvieto, Bra, Greve in Chianti and Positano. These municipalities were already active in the Slow Food movement. Slow Food has since become an independent arm of the international Cittaslow network.

Slow Food

Slow Food is dedicated to the production and enjoyment of good, pure and honest food. This involves the preservation of traditional cuisine and a manner of food production which takes into account the environment, plants, animals and human health. The movement was officially set up in Italy in 1989 as a counter-reaction to the world of Fast Food. Slow Food now has more than 80,000 members in fifty countries.
