Cittaslow is the international accreditation network for municipalities that provide the highest quality living environment, landscape, local produce, hospitality, natural environment, infrastructure, cultural history and identity preservation. Only municipalities with less than 50,000 residents can be accredited. The origins of Cittaslow lie in Orvieto (Italy).
Quality of life
Monitoring, preserving, strengthening and promoting local identity is of utmost importance in these distinctive regions, particularly in the present age of urbanisation and homogeneity. Residents and visitors of a Cittaslow are able to enjoy life and a high level of hospitality at a slower pace.
Monitoring and promoting the living environment quality is integral to being a Cittaslow. A clean and healthy environment, the strengthening of agricultural qualities and good infrastructure are high on the agenda for any Cittaslow municipality, which cherishes cultural and historical heritage, local traditions and the production and promotion of local produce.
Progress with preservation
Cittaslow assists in increasing awareness by policy makers, institutions, entrepreneurs and residents. The accreditation encourages these stakeholders to take responsibility for the development of their own municipality. Alongside attention to traditions a Cittaslow is also aware that technological advancements aid development. In other words, Cittaslow offers a framework for the future whilst preserving the past.
