Cittaslow is the international mark of accreditation for municipalities that provide the highest quality living environment, local produce, hospitality, natural environment, infrastructure, cultural history and identity preservation. Only municipalities with less than 50,000 residents can be accredited. Cittaslow Netherlands represents a network of all municipalities in the Netherlands that will receive the Cittaslow accreditation in the future.
Cittaslow Capital City
The municipality of Midden-Delfland became the first Dutch Cittaslow on the 28th of June 2008 and was therefore given the title of Cittaslow Capital City of the Netherlands. Ensuring the monitoring, promotion and propagation of local identity in areas of authenticity is of utmost importance, especially in the present age of urbanisation and homogeneity. By creating a Cittaslow network, municipalities can work together to improve their quality of life by cherishing their distinctiveness and employing new techniques which make progress possible.
